GALVANISING MADE BETTER WITH WORLD-CLASS TECHNOLOGY

 

NSAIL galvanising process is squarely focused on delivering the best protection against corrosion and rusting. Stringent quality control measures ensure that we always stay a step ahead of the industry standards.

Galvanising is the most effective and economical method of protecting steel against rusting. The protection mechanisms of zinc coating are twofold, as follows:

Zinc forms a protective film of stable basic carbonate when exposed to air which prevents further reaction of air with surface. The galvanising process helps prevent corrosion of steel caused by exposure to other metals in the presence of an electrolyte or due to exposure to oxygen and water. By putting on a barrier of zinc coating on the steel, a galvanised steel sheet is able to better resist the destructive forces acting against it. Zinc undergoes the galvanic action in which the zinc ‘sacrifices’ itself to protect the steel, due to the formation of a galvanic cell. The surface of the iron is covered with a layer of the more active metal zinc. This active metal loses electrons in preference to iron and so prevents the rusting.

However, the covering metal gets consumed in due time. But, as long as it is present, even minor uncoated or uncovered surface of the iron does not rust. In doing this, even scratches, discontinuities or bare spots in the protective layer of zinc are protected by the surrounding coating. This type of protection is called ‘sacrificial protection’. Simply put, the heavier the zinc coating, the better the corrosion resistance.

An on-line automatic thickness gauge maintains and controls the thickness of the zinc coating accurately and ensures uniform coating. Regular quality checks of raw materials are also carried out prior to processing.
